Serialism and Opacity in Phonological Theory

چکیده
Opacity is a natural language phenomenon where phonological process rendered non-surface-true by virtue of its interaction with other processes. Phonologists have long been fascinated opaque generalizations both from typological standpoint (What kinds are found?) and theoretical one (Which formal tools permit an analysis opacity?). This review aims to ( a) discuss the breadth in light phonologists’ (often implicit) working definitions opacity b) address as flashpoint larger debates generative phonology, between rule-based serial approach Chomsky & Halle's Sound Pattern English constraint-based parallel Optimality Theory. A conclusion offered here that well-known problems Theory faces some due not lack serialism but fact such processes input-motivated rather than output-motivated.

Harmonic Serialism and Finite-State Optimality Theory
This paper presents a new finite-state model of Optimality Theory (OT). In this model, two assumptions are imposed on the OT framework. Firstly, I adopt the Harmonic Serialism version of OT, in which output forms are derived from input forms via a series of incremental changes. Secondly, constraints are assumed to be strictly local in the sense that each markedness constraint specifies a set of...
متن کاملFeatures in Phonological Theory
Features are central in phonological theory. They come in different varieties. Using the methods of [263] we shall analyse a few conditions on phonological structures. This will elucidate the tradeoff between features on the one hand (and structure) and principles on the other. Without making any claims as to which method is superior, we shall simply outline what choices one has in describing t...
متن کاملAfrican languages and phonological theory
I’ve been asked to write about the mutual influence of African languages and phonological theory, specifically addressing two questions: What and how have African language contributed to phonological theory? What and how have linguistic theories contributed to the understanding African phonology? To treat these questions properly would be a major undertaking, first, because of the large number ...
متن کاملOptimality Theory and phonological acquisition
The past ten years have shown an ever-increasing revival of interest in phonological acquisition. The introduction of Optimality Theory (OT; Prince & Smolensky 1993) has played a major role in this revival. Both “markedness” and “constraints on outputs” have often figured in accounts of phonological development, and these concepts are central in OT. The most fundamental change is probably that ...
متن کامل12 Metrics and phonological theory
The field of metrics studies how conventionalized rhythmic patterns are manifested by phonological material in verse. Metrics and phonology are closely related fields whose interaction is yielding increasingly important results. This chapter outlines some of these findings, as well as directions for future research. First, a caveat concerning what this chapter is not about. Metrics is only part...
